Dear Pet Allies,
I wanted to write and send an update on my dog Moose, formerly Elvis and nearing 2 yrs. old this May, I adopted from your organization . . .
How many individuals can say they went into PetSmart to buy a fish and instead brought home a new Walker Hound/Lab mix puppy? I may be one of the lucky few. He was there with his two other brothers, which made it impossible to choose only one. So after careful thought, a strategical plan was devised . . . lets let the three puppies go and see which one comes to me! Looking back, I know we both chose each other.
Moose and I started off "small" in the Fall of 2007, once he received all his puppy shots; enrolling in a puppy obedience class with an individual specializing in animal behavior with a Ph.D. in this area. In addition to a Howl-O-Ween costume contest, where Moose was a dog trying to fit into a tiny pumpkin costume (he grew so big so quick!); a best kiss contest winner at a pet party on Valentine"s Day 2008; frequenting his many friends birthday parties for puppy approved cupcakes; and of course going to his favorite, the DOG PARK to see his friends!
We quickly moved up in our training, and started intermediate obedience training in the Spring of 2008. We then made a flying leap into agility training, literally. We started off training in the Foundations in Agility class at the Tucson Humane Society, learning all of the basics about the equipment and how to train each piece. However, the hot Tucson Summer weather led us to an indoor, air-conditioned agility training center in Tucson, where we completed Beginning Agility I and Agility II by the fall. Our instructor invited us out to train on an agility training course (like a USDAA run agility competition) a few Saturdays each month where Moose is able to complete the full run. Oh, and I have to add, that this October Moose was a MOOSE for the Howl-O-Ween costume contest!
This January, Moose was selected to become a member of the Saguaro Scrambles Agility Club, Inc. in Tucson, AZ. He is currently practicing each Sunday with the club for his first competition as Novice in the February 14-15, 2009 (USDAA) competition. However, he will also be competing in this years best kiss contest . . . he is reigning champion after all. Well, I never thought I could be more proud of him. But boy, was I wrong.
I am currently a graduate student at the University of Arizona attaining my Ph.D. in Cancer Biology this February. When people ask me what I'm going to do afterward I tell them, I decided to apply to Veterinary schools (to start the August 2009 school year). I have volunteered at Southern Arizona Veterinary Hospital with Dr. Mary Kay Klein and today Moose is a proud blood donor at Southern Arizona Veterinary Hospital in Tucson, AZ and making a difference in the world by saving lives.
Please feel free to contact me if you would like this letter in Word format via email, additional photos, or anything else. Thank you so much!
P.S. I still have all of his baby teeth I could find in an envelope!
